Co-Explorer
Begin with the ground, and the systems tell you what they are.
For twenty-five years my work has moved between systems, cybernetics and the literacies of the living world — and toward the quality of the ground in which people, organisations and ideas actually live. New explorations are opening in 2026, all of it now in the context of AI and large language models.
New Co-Explorations, 2026
The work continues individually, with the College of Exploration and CoExploration Limited, and alongside the worldwide cybernetics community. Four threads are alive right now — each a different face of the same question: what keeps a living system whole, and how do we learn to read it?
A quieter, longer-term inquiry runs underneath them all, pursued with colleagues in the cybernetics community: how living systems regulate themselves at their deepest levels, where biology, cybernetics and the physics of life appear to meet. It is early, and held lightly.
Ground Regulation
A diagnostic framework for the health of the ground — the medium of relationships, communication and trust in which people and organisations actually live. Most problems aren't failures of parts; they're failures of the ground.
Reading the whole
Twenty-five years of systems and cybernetic thinking, now turned toward learning: how cybernetic principles can be seen not as metaphor but as the real working of living systems, and taught so they become portable.
Water, as system and source
New collaborations on water — connecting watersheds and agencies, water literacy, and water as a living system — continuing the line that runs from ocean literacy through earth, atmospheric and energy literacy.
Water, vibration & spirit
An exploration of the relation between water, love, vibration and frequency, and our heart, mind, body and spirit — where the scientific and the contemplative meet.
A quarter-century of literacies
The through-line of the work is literacy of the living world — helping people read the systems they are part of. It began with the ocean and grew outward, and it continues to evolve into the literacy of systems themselves.
